Post-Workout Super Smoothie

By  |  4 Comments

Smoothies are A-MAZING post-workout because they take about 1 minute to make, they taste delish and your body can absorb and assimilate all the nutrients quickly because they have already been broken down.

It’s really important to rehydrate after a workout, as well as consume protein and important minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium as these are vital electrolytes that you need to replace, especially if you have sweated lots.

Here’s the recipe for my favourite Super Smoothie:

  • 1 Banana
  • Handful of Kale or Spinach
  • Approx. 250ml of rice/ oat/ almond milk or water (as the base)
  • 1 tbsp Chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp Almonds (or any other nuts)
  • 1 tbsp Sunflower seeds (or any other seeds)
  • 1 tsp of Maca powder
  • 1 tbsp Cacao (to give a yummy chocolate taste)
  • Sprinkle of Cinnamon powder

Blitz it all up and voila! It’s that simple – you will have a super smoothie in less than 2 minutes!

Cacao is a fantastic source of minerals including magnesium, zinc, iron and antioxidants.

Maca is one of my favourite superfoods and I love adding to my smoothies. Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable that contains lots of minerals and vitamins especially calcium and phosphorus; it also helps the body adapt to stress and is known to enhance immunity, libido, fertility, stamina and energy.

Bananas are full of potassium and green leafy veggies such as kale and spinach contain lots of magnesium, iron and vitamins A, C and K.

The nuts and seeds provide an excellent source of protein, as well as fibre, essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6) and vitamin E.

This Super Smoothie is literally packed full of goodness – enjoy!

This is great Michelle. Do you make it fresh everyday or do you make it in batches that last you for a few days. I really want to try it. Sounds Delish!

It’s amazing Sarah – you will love it! I make it fresh every day because it’s really quick to make and it’s always nicer fresh. However, I have left in the fridge overnight before in a sealed container and it was fine, it can separate slightly but nothing that a good shake doesn’t fix! :-)

Michelle, I simply loved this recipe! It’s not only health but very yummy and easy to make.
What do you suggest for pre workout??? I do crossfit, which is high intense exercise and do it early in the mornings before work

Hi Lilian, so glad you like it! For a pre-workout I always like to use a superfood powder and some maca powder, as both of these are great for boosting energy! With the superfood powder, you could either go for a greens blend or a berry blend. I like Revive by Superhealth or C Berry Blast by Nutraorganics. You just mix the superfooods and the maca with some water in a shaker or blend up with a bit of fruit.
