Feeling Stressed? Try this…

Do you often feel anxious on a daily basis and worry incessantly about certain things in your life?

Are you always running around and have a million things on your ‘to-do’ list?

Do you wake up in the morning and dread the day ahead, wondering how you are going to get through?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then you are most likely experiencing unhealthy levels of stress. Many of us are stressed most of the time because it seems to be the way that we live our lives these days. The key though is how to manage this stress and equip ourselves with the tools to be able to handle it so that it doesn’t become a problem and infringe on our health.

Stress is so common in life today as we seem to be travelling at lightening speed and have all these expectations of both ourselves and others. We tend to overcommit ourselves in all areas of our lives and that can leave us feeling anxious, wired and depleted.

Effects of Stress on the body

Stress is very toxic and can be very damaging to our health, especially if we are stressed for long periods of time.

Each time we get stressed or find ourselves in a stressful situation our body goes into ‘fight or flight’ mode which stimulates certain processes in the body and releases ‘stress’ hormones that allow us to deal with the situation.

Long-term stress can:

  • Cause sleep disturbances and insomnia.
  • Affect fertility and hormonal health.
  • Make you feel fatigued, anxious and depressed.
  • Cause headaches and migraines.
  • Reduce your memory and concentration.
  • Cause digestive issues such as heartburn, reflux, IBS and stomach ulcers.
  • Reduce immune function, making you more prone to bacteria & viruses.

How to Reduce Stress

  • Eat foods that are high in Magnesium and B vitamins such as leafy green veggies, almonds, cacao, wholegrain rice, lentils and avocado. These nutrients increase energy levels and combat the effects of stress.
  • Don’t forget to stop and breathe! Take time out to just be and acknowledge what you have achieved.
  • Avoid caffeine and stimulants as they can provoke a stress response in the body and also contribute to anxiety.
  • Write lists and get organised – feeling overwhelmed by everything you have to do will only exacerbate your stress.
  • Get rid of your expectations as you are only putting unnecessary stress on yourself!
  • Exercise – try to move your body every day as exercise has such a beneficial effect on the body.
  • Herbs such as Rhodiola, Withania and Siberian Ginseng are fantastic for helping the body adapt to stress.

I gave my office a good tidy-up this morning as just stepping into it and looking at all the stuff and paperwork everywhere was really stressing me out! I feel like a new woman now and can actually focus on all the things I need to do – amazing!
