Are You Listening To Your Body’s Warning Signs?

By  |  0 Comments

Quite often our bodies give us little tell-tale signs long before a major health problem arises, however the question is – do you always listen to your body and what it is telling you?

Most people don’t, they just shrug it off because they are so busy going a million miles an hour that they simply don’t have time or can’t be bothered to think about it! You should never let life get in the way of your health because you could end up with some long-term health complications.

Here are some common tell-tale signs that the body is telling us that all is not well.

There are many different types of headaches and they can vary from a dull achey feeling to a full-blown migraine. The cause of a headache will also vary but the main thing that you need to pay attention to is when and how often are they happening, how long do they last and are there any specific trigger factors. Here are some common causes of headaches:

  • Dehydration
  • Caffeine
  • Muscle tension and magnesium deficiency
  • Stress
  • Eye strain – make sure you get your eyes checked regularly!
  • Allergic reaction – chocolate, cheese and wine are known triggers
  • Lack of food
  • Tiredness – are you burning the candle at both ends?
  • Poor posture – get checked out by a chiropractor or an osteopath
  • Tumours

Muscle Cramps

Muscle cramps are often a sign of magnesium deficiency, however it can also be due to a deficiency of other important electrolytes such as sodium, calcium or potassium. Dehydration and excessive vomiting or diarrhoea can cause a loss of electrolytes in the body which can result in cramping or spasms in the muscles as these important electrolytes are essential for controlling contraction and relaxation of muscles. Muscle cramps can also be due to poor circulation and the body’s inability to get oxygen to the tissues in the extremities.

Dark Circles under Eyes

There are a number of reasons why you can get dark circles under the eyes:

  • Low iron
  • Allergies (known as the ‘allergy shiners’) to food, pollen or dust
  • Sinus infection or a cold
  • Tiredness and stress
  • Poor liver function
  • Dehydration

Whenever we crave anything, it is usually our body’s way of telling us that it needs something and this is usually a key nutrient. Some people crave sugar, and for others it will be chocolate. All these cravings do mean something so pay attention.

  • Sugar – the cells are possibly not getting their fuel effectively and are therefore hungry. This could be due to a chromium deficiency or a condition call insulin resistance.
  • Chocolate – this is normally a magnesium deficiency sign. Check out this post about Magnesium.
  • Hot chips or crisps – these foods can satiate a salt craving and could be linked to a sodium deficiency or an electrolyte imbalance.
  • Butter or cheese – high fat foods such as these can indicate a need for increased fats. Fats provide a source of energy and are essential to produce hormones and vitamin D in the body.

Cracked Lips

Cracks at the corner of your mouth can be a sign that you are lacking in certain B vitamins – mainly B2, B3 and B12. Zinc and iron deficiency can also contribute to this, as can a change in weather.

Sore Tongue

A sore tongue can be an indication of iron deficiency or anaemia, and possibly B vitamins too. It can also be due to dehydration, a dry mouth, infection or oral thrush. If it persists, definitely get it checked out by your healthcare provider.

Recognise any of these signs? If you do, make sure that you get them checked out so that they don’t keep happening. If you are experiencing any other weird body signs, share them in the comments below and I’ll do my best to let you know what they might mean.
